Recovery Isn’t Linear (And That Took Me a While to Accept)

One of the biggest surprises after stroke recovery was learning that progress isn’t a straight line.
You wake up some days feeling strong. Other days you feel stuck. One step forward, two steps back feels almost built into the process. And I’ll tell you, that was one of the hardest truths to accept.
I used to look for patterns, milestones, and clear markers that told me, “Yes, you’re getting better.” But healing doesn’t come with neat arrows pointing up. Healing comes in curves, in loops, in days that feel heavy and days that feel light.
There were times I was discouraged. I’d think, I did this yesterday, so why can’t I do it today? It wasn’t until I began to separate my self-worth from my daily progress that I found a little peace.
Here’s what helped me:
• Celebrate the small victories even if they seem tiny
• Allow setbacks without judgment
• Remember that rest is part of progress
One day, you’ll look back and realize the line actually has moved. Just not in a perfect way.
Recovery isn’t linear. And that’s okay.
